Identity: Who You Say I Am

Updated: Jan 2, 2019

The truth lies not with who they say we are, but who the God of Gods says we are. As Christians, we’re constantly going against the world. But who cares! You're the King of King's kid - joint heirs with Christ. Don't ever view yourself less. It’s so easy to give into the temptation, if we’re not true to ourselves and true to our identity which lies with Christ.

As Children of God, we are called to know God, to love God and to serve God. That’s the beauty of it. God has already accepted us broken and is waiting for us to run to him to make us whole again. No lie can tear down God's love for you. He created each and every one of you with so much purpose to fulfil. You just have to trust in his unique plan.

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. ” Jeremiah 29:11

If you woke up today, I want you to know that God is not finished with you. He has so so much planned for you. No one can replace you, no one can ever be you. So why would you want to be a fraud of someone else? God gave you your own identity not for you to try and rob someone else’s.

You are beautifully and uniquely made to be a child of God, that in itself is a wonderful thing. To know that our Heavenly Father took time sculpting us and that we are not just “accidents” - a term which our world likes to throw around these days. Unfortunately, a lot of people no longer see their purpose in life because they haven’t truly experienced the joy of knowing that God is good and in that state of vulnerability, the enemy attacks.

The enemy wants to infiltrate lies into our head that we’re not good enough or that we have no worth. The enemy wants to take our identity and subvert it, making us feel as though we are less and inadequate, when truly God promised us “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” But that’s exactly the point, without God being the centre of our lives, we can be a mess. Our identity is complete because of Christ working through our weaknesses to give us strength. After all, we are God’s adopted children and as a Good Good Father he has constantly shown us patience, unconditional love, generosity and tender care. He has called us to be in relationship with him and to accept Who he says we are and not who the world says we are.

Many of us care sooo much about Instagram likes and how many followers we have on social media and use this as the criteria for measuring our worth. The online world is superficial, no one ever posts their failures. So if your character is being defined by anything apart from God, you have a mis-view of who God is calling you to be. For in God we find our worth, for in God we find our identity, to grow in likeliness to him - to be confirmed in him.

It’s hard not to care about what other people think of us, but we have to realise that God’s opinion of us is what matters most. The word of God is the only thing unchangeable and constant, whereas our world is constantly changing in its perception of what is attractive. The journey to finding yourself is along the same path as finding God and letting him reveal your identity to you. Therefore, the truth is God will never forsake you - knowing your worth and identity lies with Him is far greater than putting on a fake identity just to fit in. As children of God, we were born to stand out and be the light shining through the darkness...
