How To Not Crack Under Exam Pressure

You know you’ve reached exam season, when the stress of everyone around you is starting to kick in and the pressure is mounting to a climax. You’ve revised tediously over the last few months, for it to just end in the few moments that you sit your exam and as soon as the time is up, you can't go back and change things. It's this fear of the unknown that causes us to stress way too much about exams.

The reason is: we’ve equated our grades to our sense of happiness and worth. That if you didn’t get an A*: you’re not good enough, you’re unqualified and you’re a failure. But your worth isn’t defined by a letter or number on a sheet of paper – your worth is a testimony of the price Jesus paid for you with His life. A value that is beyond measure, as a child of God.

Many of us struggle with a false sense of perfection. We try to measure ourselves up to the standard of the Creator and we end up burning ourselves out trying to measure up to God’s ways which are higher than that of our own.

Instead, Proverbs 16:3 already gives us a criteria for success - “Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will succeed”.

It’s about surrendering and trust. The Lord see’s your efforts and promises to reward you, so don’t lose hope of the promise He has destined for you. God has already equipped you with everything you need to step into your purpose and receive the promises He has for you. But it’s the enemy who will use pressure, as a tactic, to prevent you from trusting in the Lord and allowing Him to make a way for you.

What we don’t realise is that God has a specific plan mapped out for us. He will place you exactly where you need to be placed. So instead of worrying about the future, surrender to His way and His will. If God wants you to be somewhere, trust me you will be there, and you will get the grades.

Believers, some of you don’t understand that when you go into that exam room, you already have an advantage. You have the Lord on your side, you have the Holy Spirit working within you to give you understanding and knowledge.

The Lord doesn’t work miracles on His own. He requires you to put in effort. If you know you’ve worked hard and tried your best, then that’s all that matters, and you’ll get the grades you deserve. But even if you don’t get the A* you dreamed about; God’s promise is still true. You just have to trust the path He has for you; it just might be a different route or take a little longer, so don't let the pressure get to you.

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” – Jeremiah 29:11

Yes, exams are important but they ain’t the end of the world. At the end of the day, God isn’t going to ask you how many A* you got because that’s not the criteria required to get into heaven. The real exam of life determines where you spend your eternity – do you pass and make it to heaven, or do you fall short and spend eternity in hell?

In the grand scheme of things, these passing exams won’t matter. I remember getting my GCSE results and thanking God. I knew that without Him, there was no way I would’ve achieved the grades I was sooo happy with. I remember leaving each exam thinking, Jesus I’ve tried my hardest and now it’s up to you. Instead of being anxious, I placed my trust in Him and He came right through. For in order to achieve it, you must believe it.

If you’re preparing to sit your exams, Good Luck! I pray that the Holy Spirit will help you through this tough season in your life. God will continue to work with you in your struggles and remember, no matter what: you are God’s Masterpiece – Ephesians 2:10.
