Held Hostage To Shame

Shame says that because I am flawed, I am unacceptable. Grace says that though I am flawed, I am cherished.

I want you to know, that you don’t have to live with the guilt or the shame that the enemy is holding you hostage to. You are free, because Christ set you free. By dying on the Cross, He took away your sin and your shame. He carried your burdens and the weight of your sin so that through death, a new creation would be formed – whole, renewed and transformed.

“We know that our old sinful selves were crucified with Christ so that sin might lose its power in our lives. We are no longer slaves to sin.” – Romans 6:6

The feeling of guilt is a natural feeling of “I did something bad” when we’ve actively wronged or violated an internal standard. Shame, on the other hand, is a feeling that attacks with the lie “I am something bad”. Whereas, guilt focuses on the action, shame focuses on the person. Shame is a lie that opposes the truth that God made us good.

Every day, the enemy tries to make us believe that what God says about us is not true. As the author of lies, the enemy will give you a counterfeit version of the real authentic plan God has for you. The enemy uses shame as a tool to get us to live beneath the story that God is writing for us.

Shame is what keeps us from stepping into the identity that God has given us, because we perceive ourselves as unworthy of His love and affection. Yet, though we can be physically released from bondage, our mindset can still be tied down. God wants to release you fully from bondage of shame and release you into freedom.

Our mighty ever living God loved us so much, that He humbled Himself to become human and to die for us, so that through the one sacrifice of His beloved Son, the rest of humanity would experience freedom through the blood of the Lamb. No matter how far you've sinned, Jesus still loved you so much to die for you.

God’s love for you encompasses so much that He doesn’t look at you as filthy, dirty or unworthy. Instead, He looks at you as His treasured beloved child. His reckless love for you, would make Him leave the 99 to search for you, till you come back to Him. Your worth lies in the Cross, for you are no longer bound to the weight of sin.

Next time the enemy tries to attack you with shame, tell yourself that the enemy is an enemy of progress. The enemy wants you to keep looking back, so you fail to look ahead at the path God is calling you to.

“Put on the full armour of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes” – Ephesians 6:11.

You are sons and daughters of the almighty God. Don’t ever let the enemy hold you down. You are healed and forgiven - your shame was nailed to that rugged cross.

Remember: “You are not the sum of your weaknesses or failures or sins. You are the sum of the Father’s love for you and your capacity to be an image of Jesus Christ for the world”.
