5 Essential Christian Apps You Need

There is really no excuse for not having enough time to pray, read Scripture or make time with God since, at the touch of a finger, we now have some amazing Christian apps to help us spiritually nurture our relationship with God, whilst on the go. After having tried and tested many Christian Apps, here are my selection of the 5 most essential apps, which I pretty much use every day and are free.

YouVersion Bible App:

“For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.” — Proverbs 2:6

An absolute classic. The YouVersion Bible App is an essential for every Christian. The app allows you to compare Scripture with multiple versions of the Bible, as well as highlight verses, create bookmarks and add notes, which are perfect for Bible Studies.

With the new ‘Verse of the Day’ Stories and the recently added Prayer feature, you can keep track of the things you have prayed for and connect with friends and family. The best feature, however, is the various devotionals which challenges you to complete them individually or in a group. Below you can swipe through the YouVersion Bible Plans I thoroughly recommend:

Lectio 365 App:

“Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do.” — Joshua 1:8

Lectio 365 is an app that is based on the ancient practice of meditating with Scripture - Lectio Divina, originating from around 300 AD. Each daily devotional is roughly 10 minutes and consists of making time to P.R.A.Y.

P = Pause and be still.

R = Rejoice with a Psalm + Reflect on a Bible passage.

A = Ask God to help us and others.

Y = Yield to His will in our lives.

Not only is it a pretty simple form of meditation, but it also guides you every step of the way. God often speaks to us in the silence of our hearts, so this app is perfect as it encourages us to be still in His presence.

Hallow - Catholic Prayer/Meditation App:

“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Every Catholic needs the Hallow App. My favourite features include meditation on the Daily Gospel with Lectio Divina, the Rosary and the Divine Mercy Chaplet. Not only do you get to customise the length of your time in prayer, but you also get to journal after you meditate. The app also lets you pray traditional Catholic prayers like the Angelus and the Spiritual Communion Prayer.

Additional features include the Lenten Prayer Challenges and the Homilies of Fr Mike Schmitz, arguably the most-followed Catholic Priest on YouTube and Social Media. It also tracks the goals you complete and how long you have prayed with the app, to help motivate you on your spiritual journey.

YOUCAT Daily App:

“If I am delayed, you will know how people must conduct themselves in the household of God. This is the church of the living God, which is the pillar and foundation of the truth.” — 1 Timothy 3:15

YOUCAT is short for the Youth Catechism of the Catholic Church, which contains a summary of all the theological, doctrinal and dogmatic teachings of the Church. The app includes a 5-minute dose of the daily Gospel, a daily passage of the YOUCAT or DOCAT (Social Teachings of the Catholic Church) and daily Inspirations or Weekly Challenges. The app helps you track your progress by collecting badges and streaks and is another essential app for Catholic Youth.

Echo Prayer App:

“I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people. Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them.” — 1 Timothy 2:1

If you’ve ever struggled with setting time apart to pray, the Echo Prayer App is an app that helps you customise how long you want to pray for. I tend to use this app when I need to organise my prayer intentions, so I don’t forget to pray and intercede for someone. I also use the app to list the Scripture verses I want to memorise. Like many apps, it contains the streak feature to keep you accountable and motivate you.

If you try out any of these apps, let me know if they’ve helped you spiritually grow on your journey with Christ :)
