18 Things I've Learned In 18 Years
Wow, I'm finally 18 so I thought it would be the perfect timing to reflect on my childhood years and talk about the important life-lessons I've learnt along the way...
1. When You Put God First Everything Else Falls Into Place
“I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing.”— John 15:5
When you keep God at a distance, that’s when everything falls apart because you no longer allow Him to sustain it. Yet, when Christ is the Cornerstone, everything is in His hands.
2. Who I Am In Christ Jesus
“For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.”— Ephesians 2:10
If only the Creator can define its creation, then in order to figure out who you are, you don’t have to look any further than that of the Word of God. The truth is God uniquely created you on purpose, with purpose, for a purpose. You don’t have to figure out your identity, because God has already given you one. You are a son or daughter of the King, which makes you joint-heirs to the throne with Christ Jesus. You are nothing less than royalty...
3. No One Will Ever Be Able To Complete You
“So you also are complete through your union with Christ.” — Colossians 2:10
If God isn’t enough for you, no one will ever be enough. Only God can make you whole and heal your brokenness. The more you expect people to “complete” you, the more you end up breaking them.
4. Worry & Stress Less
“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” — Matthew 6:34
When we are faced with uncertainty and are weary in life, it is an open invitation to cling to Jesus. As the Prince Of Peace, when you cast all your burdens on Him, He will give your soul rest. Our prayer is that the Lord will grant us the serenity to accept the things we cannot change, the courage to change the things we can and wisdom to know the difference.
5. Friendship Is Seasonal And That’s Okay
“Friends come and friends go, but a true friend sticks by you like family.” — Proverbs 18:24
The truth is people change. The challenge is finding the ones that will stick by you through all the different seasons in life. You need friends who will edify you and strengthen you on your walk with Christ, never letting you waiver from your faith. If you don't have any brothers or sisters in Christ definitely pray about it - I'm blessed to have these guys...
6. If He Rejects You Because Of Your Choice To Save Sex Till Marriage He Didn’t Deserve You In The First Place
“Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body.” — 1 Corinthians 6:18
Know the difference between a guy who truly respects your decision and a guy who doesn’t. Never feel pressurised to do something you don’t want to do - that’s a red flag. For you don’t just want someone who will “tolerate” your decision to stay pure, you deserve someone who will walk with you on your journey...
7. Always Try Your Best
“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.” — Colossians 3:23-24
As long as you've given it 100%, there's nothing more you can do. Kinda self-explanatory...
8. How To Love Myself (Even My Insecurities)
“She is clothed with strength and dignity, and she laughs without fear of the future.” — Proverbs 31:25
One thing I used to be insecure about were my scars, yet now I’ve realised that my scars are simply a testimony of what I’ve been through. Whatever it may be, whether scars or stretch-marks or the shape or size of your body, if you’re not careful insecurity will dictate the course of your life. But when you have confidence in who your God is; you’ll start to have confidence in who you are. Learn to love yourself day in and day out, before trying to love other people...
9. Everything Happens For A Reason
“You don’t understand now what I am doing, but someday you will.” — John 13:7
You might not understand why God has you in a particular place at a particular time. Yet, God plants you exactly where you need to be to fulfil purpose. If it’s uncomfortable, it is for your growth. Stop fighting the season God has you in, because behind it lies a purpose.
10. Your Mental Health Matters
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” — Philippians 4:6-7
Anxiety is a tool that the enemy uses to prevent you from stepping into your God-given purpose. Don't underestimate the power of prayer. It invites God to intervene in our situation and help pull us out of the pit of darkness and into the light.
11. Communication Is Key
“And those who are peacemakers will plant seeds of peace and reap a harvest of righteousness.” — James 3:18
Mature relationships are honest, open and transparent. Instead of jumping to conclusions, sometimes we need to step back and allow the other person to explain themselves. Expressing to one another how it made us feel can actually make us feel at peace and make them understand what hurt us in the first place. Misunderstandings are inevitable, therefore communication is essential.
12. Stay True To Yourself
“Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.” — Matthew 5:11
No matter how hard you try, not everyone is going to like you, so stop trying to fit in. Don't compromise who you are, just because the rest of the world doesn't like you. The reality is they didn't like Jesus either and He was perfect...
13. Step Out Of Your Comfort Zone
"Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go." — Joshua 1:9
Sometimes, in order to step into our destiny, we need to leave behind our security. Sometimes it’s about taking a risk; for where the risk is the greatest, God is there with us.
14. Comparison Is The Thief Of Your Joy
“Each one should test their own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else, for each one should carry their own load.” — Galatians 6:4-5
Comparison is a vicious cycle: it either leads to the sin of envy or to the sin of pride. Comparison only slows you down and leads to the path of discouragement and the feeling of insecurity. Instead, focus on yourself, carry your own load and keep your eyes on Jesus, striving for holiness in every aspect of your life.
15. The Likes You Get On Instagram Is Not A Reflection Of Your Worth
“Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honour God with your body.” — 1 Corinthians 6:19-20
When your self worth is dictated by who you think likes you, you’ve got it all wrong. You are valuable because the value of your life is not determined by the mess you’ve made but by the price that Jesus paid. So stop measuring yourself up to false standards, for you are worth much more to God than you could ever imagine.
16. God Knows What’s Best For You
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” — Jeremiah 29:11
God has closed doors that I would have not been strong enough to close and opened doors that I would’ve not been strong enough to open. What may feel like the end of the world, might end up being a blessing in disguise. So take comfort in the fact that the Lord is in control.
17. Lying Always Gets You Caught
“Don’t lie to each other, for you have stripped off your old sinful nature and all its wicked deeds. Put on your new nature, and be renewed as you learn to know your Creator and become like him.” — Colossians 3:9-10
Trust me, I've learnt it the hard way. The truth is the more you sneak around and the more you lie about things, the more deception and secrecy lures you into a corner with no escape route. Save yourself from having to confess later and just be open and honest. The truth always comes out in the end...
18. It’s Okay To Not Have Your Life Figured Out
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.” — Proverbs 3:5-6
Many of us go on our own adventures that we end up going places we want to go and not where God wants us to go. It’s about surrendering your plans to the Lord and asking for permission to pursue in the first place. If God wants you to be there, He will allow for provision in your life…
